Please see the attached articles on the Umgqomo Ophephile project, a partnership between the Durban Metro, Industry and the informal street traders.

Metro City Health are busy with developing awareness raising materials including a video to raise awareness of communities, workers and inspectors (regulators) of the dangers of used chemical drums for domestic purposes. They are going to stop the sale of such on the streets which requires more cost effective new ones or the traders. The project started as a pilot last year with Megapak and Engen as main sponsors to date, the need is there to expand and include all of the informal street traders that the Metro has registered and permitted to trade.
We not only invite all drum manufacturers to join our efforts to participate and help grow the project to prevent the poisonings and help create a safer way to store drinking water and for other domestic purposes, but also wish to create a greater awareness among the general public and therefore need more sponsorship and participation from industry.
Winny Nzimande (Tel: 031-311-3654) is the co-ordinator for City Health and Hayden von Blerk and Dave Tatz are the contacts for Engen and Megapak respectively. We would appreciate you advising of your intent to participate/support and any ideas you may have to add to this project.
We look forward to hearing from you and your involvement.
Best regards,
Liz Anderson
